In 2020 the CAFE, Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard is legislated to be 35 MPG. There are many cars that already achieve this. The trick is changing the mix so that all the cars sold average 35MPG. Well, after congress passed this law, the law (and Congress?) passed into irrelevance. With gas rising above $4 a gallon, GM and Ford have closed plants making SUVs and Trucks. Just shut them down for the rest of the year. They won't be caught in never-never land like they were in the 80's. Then the market changed so radically they had no plan or experience in fuel efficient vehicles. If you think it is bad now, just hop in the old time machine back to 1979! You would be selling (or parking with a "For Sale" sign), the old Buick and getting in line for this tasty ride:

I predict the 2020 CAFE standard will be met in 2010!
