Some restaurants don't need to be reviewed. This place is highly recommended, proving that writing on the internet lends no credibility, and that standards in Raleigh are low. Of course the same can be said of most towns.
We drove in on a whim. The place is a classic old drive-in, that is now a walk up. It seems to not have had maintenance since the Happy Days. We decided on a shake. I was surprised when my shake arrived before the order could be rung up. Then I saw why- an employee was pulling shakes out of a Taylor machine and staging them. Bad, bad sign. Fonzy would be pissed!
Now suspicious, I watched the operation through the windows. The flames on the tiny grill are dramatic. But the dirty grease in the fryer was too- for different reasons. Then I saw where the fries came from, and it really didn't matter. They are frozen. And the voilume is too much for the single fryer, so the oil is always under temperature. The fries sink for a minute or so while gaining heat, then come lazily to the surface, in an oily dance. Sad.
We decided this dive is everything it can be- greasy, dirty (not in a good way), with uncaring ownership and a disdain for customers. Avoid Char Grill in Raleigh.
