We picked Montreuil sur mer because of its proximity to Le Touquet and the chunnel. We were to meet some good friends there from England.
We arrived at our internet reserved Chambre d'hote around six and were warmly greeted by its hostess, who showed me our room. I was somewhat surprised by how tiny it was, (pictures do lie) the bathroom down the hall (but only YOU use it, I was assured). I was then informed that 5 girls would be staying in the suite across the hall and that we had to park on the road. However, we never heard the girls, never did have to share the privy and breakfast was excellent due to fresh bread, home made exotic jams and home made yogurt. Maryvonne got the recipe.
We met our friends in Le Touquet, about twenty minutes from Montreuil sur mer, a very common name for a town in France. Le Touquet combines three distinct areas: beach front, "disfigured" by the beach style apartment buildings, the belle epoque houses gone. The seond area; a main shopping road, a Cannes wanabe. And the third area: huge and gorgeous home, reminding us of some neighborhoods in Florida. We had lunch; typical quiche and three lettuce leaves with bottled dressing, and walked the beach and back to our friends' hotel.
That night, we ate out; Paul had ham with Rockfort sauce and Maryvonne had rouget with vinegar; both good and good value; we ate for twenty euros; even the service was good.
The next day, we met our friends in Montreuil and were eager to show the bastion, the quaint little streets. They treated us for lunch at a "broche" restaurant. We all expected skewers but in fact got roasted fish, young chicken and steak, ample servings of salad incredibly delicious potatoes marinated in salted butter.
After one more walk around town, we said good bye to our friends and continued our walk around the city; we discovered the system of trails; some bordering the Canche river. An abandonned moulin and its buildings caused us to dream for a second about refurbishing it, when we realized it was located right across from the water treatment plant. What a pity; the site was on the amazurite colored river.
Paul does not want to eat tonight...I am for salad and dessert!
Montreuil sur mer turned out to be a cute town, full of overpriced restaurants and hotels, surrounded by the most complete set of walls we have ever seen. Worth the detour? Maybe.
Tomorrow, Monday the 29th of September on to Germany.
